Each year over 125,000 horses are transported out of the United States to Canada and Mexico where they are slaughtered for human consumption in overseas markets. Some of these animals are thoroughbreds–champions that for some reason are simply no longer desirable. Maybe it was just that a race was lost, a colt was simply the wrong color, a brood mare stopped producing foals. Many are neglected, some injured, some starving. Whatever the reason, they ended up discarded and dumped at the kill pens.
For more than five years Forgotten Angels Equine Rescue (FAER) has saved horses from these pens and given them sanctuary in a safe and loving environment. Our volunteers network far and wide to save horses, ponies, donkeys, mini-horses, and mules from the dreaded transport trucks. At our Medford stable we nurture, train, and provide whatever veterinary care is needed to restore a horse’s body and spirit. Then we either find a new and loving home or provide a quiet, safe haven for those who are crippled, blind, or unsuitable for adoption. Our mission is to save as many as we can from this horrible fate…to continue making a difference, one horse at a time until the slaughter stops.
So far we have rescued and re-homed over 200 horses. We’re very proud of our successes and we now also provide a place where children and their adults can come and experience the gentle breath of a loving horse. We want to keep going but these efforts are very costly and we receive no outside support. We are always working to raise the critical funds we need to keep our stable going. We are hosting our Basket and Gift Auction on October 7 at Hope Church in Voorhees, and we’re asking for your help.
Would you consider donating a gift for one of our prize baskets? Any gift – merchandise, tickets, gift certificates, gift cards, or monetary donations will support our efforts. Your help will be so greatly appreciated and all contributions are tax deductible –receipts will be provided upon request. You’ll be included in our program, gift list, and advertising on our website.
We hope to receive donations as soon as possible, by September 20 at the latest. Please send donations to FAER, Carole Shankin, 509 Lake St, Haddon Heights, NJ, 08035. Please note, if you need information or someone to pick-up an item, call 856 296-3334 and we’ll respond promptly. Your generosity is greatly appreciated – our animals thank you for your support.
